Juvenile Remidiation Curriculum

Slide 7.gif

Overview

As part of a two-person instructional design team, I contributed to the development of a psychoeducational course designed to help juveniles improve their legal understanding and readiness to participate in court proceedings. The curriculum was developed in alignment with North Carolina’s Juvenile Capacity to Proceed legislation, aiming to serve youth aged 8–17 who have been found incapable to proceed.

01 Empathize

We began by understanding the unique challenges faced by juveniles who lack the capacity to proceed in court. This included their cognitive development, emotional needs, and legal knowledge gaps.

Worked closely with legal experts, psychologists, and support staff to gather insights about the learners’ needs.

02 Define

Defined key problems: How can we support juveniles in understanding complex legal concepts? How can we make learning flexible and individualized?

Clear learning goals were established: increase factual understanding of juvenile court and improve communication with legal representatives.

03 Ideate

Brainstormed multiple solutions including interactive storytelling, visual animations, and step-by-step scenarios.

Explored different content delivery methods to ensure engagement and accessibility.

04 Prototype

Developed a digital curriculum with 10 structured modules using Rise 360, Storyline 360 and Vyond.

Included personalized pacing features, interactive quizzes, and visual cues to simplify complex legal concepts.

05 Test

Gathered feedback from support specialists and legal educators during initial rollouts.

Iterated the content based on feedback to enhance clarity, engagement, and learning outcomes.
